"I haven't expected that!" said Huang Jinsheng, who won the champion of the junior section. "My major is marine biology. The business related to my major mostly goes to China, such as the export and the market, so I came here and study Mandarin. I chose Dalian also because of my major. I want to choose a city close to the beach, and I like the city which is less crowded, thus Dalian is my first choice. "

Kitabe Kasumi who is from Tokyo, Japan, won the champion of the senior section. Her father is a Chinese but they never talk in Chinese at home. She had many friends from China when she was in Japan, therefore,  though she did not learn Mandarin on purpose, she can speak it fluently. Her elder sister has studied in the Chinese Institute of Dalian University of Foreign Languages. Influenced by her sister, Kitabe Kasumi also chose to learn Chinese in Dalian after graduating from high school .

"We hold the Chinese Speaking Contest each term. Through this kind of the contest, we'd like to improve the students' interest in studying Mandarine and also to check up the achievements they've gained," said Ren Xuemei, the vice dean of the school of Chinese Studies of DUFL.

After the speaking contest, these foreign students brought their wonderful performances including the Chinese painting, Chinese pop songs, piano solo, XinJiang dance, poem eclocnte, flute solo and two-stringed Chinese fiddle on the stage to show their talents.

Oshima Hiromi, a girl from Shizuoka, Japan, played a famous song "Edelweiss" by Chinese traditional musical instrument, Erhu. She said Erhu was very popular in Japan because of a traditional Chinese band called 12 Girls Band. She has been in Dalian for half a year, and learned Erhu for almost 3 months. She has practiced for two weeks for this competition.

Todd Bokin, a junior undergraduate from America, recited "Bringing in the Wine", a famous poem of Li Po, Poet Immortal in China, . Though he was a little nervous and could not give a fluent recitation, his performance impressed judges a lot.

"Before the competition, I was not interested in ancient Chinese. It was my girlfriend, Haiyan, who advised me to give the performance. " Todd said. Now Todd not only read the poetry written by LiPo, but the ones written by Du Fu, the Poet Sage in China.

Mr.Jin, a professor as well as a judge, said that it was the first time for the Institute to hold a talent competition. "The champion would go to the Dalian Foreigners Talents Competition in December," he said. "I feel proud of the these students for their wonderful performances in just ten days to prepare."
